at the 'Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts'
Last week I had the good fortune to spend one week in the UK, in Norwich, at the University East Anglia. (look at this distinguished typography HO HO)
I was with professors of my school and some friends to make a short film. The plan was to film students reading one page of a book, a book they have chosen and which matters for them at that time of their life. More specially it was students living in a very special place, a terraced residence known as 'Ziggurat' or 'Zigourrat' (it's the name given to an ancien religious building in the ancient Mesopotamian).
& I know at the moment that has nothing to do with drawings above . . .
Inside the university was an art center, in particular there was a large collection of objects, from differents times, places and cultures (Maya, Chinese Dynasties, Egyptian Dynasties, Chorrera culture, North America, Northern New Ireland / to mention origins of objects drawn). Of course it was stunning too see objects separated from us by several millennia. But I think we must not look at them like something exotic or decorativ, or primitiv, but like something close to us and about us. A kind of way to reconcile ourselves with the grinning and distored human within us, away from light pollution hurting the night. There is hybridation of human representation with the shape of the objects, with animals... and for some time I really wonder about the subversive power of animale representation (and the absence of plants representation). For me this objects are very close to conscience, i don't know how explain better.
However there is two things I would like to remain. One : this objects are presented as art objects, in an exhibition, which is a way of seeing that has nothing to do with the objects. The conception of art is a recent invention in history, more precisely art is a concept, recent invention of the West and not at all "a universal global phenomen". And two : the construction of world according to an European perspective.
sorry for my english if .. there are errors...
